Rejoicing the Heart

Psalm 19:8a “the statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.”

To the weary and downcast I want to say “rest in the word of God”.

This word “statutes” is the Hebrew Verb “פָּקַד (pāqad); though it has a wide range of meaning, it’s core meaning basically expresses the action of overseeing an individual for a particular purpose” (Mounce’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old & New Testament Words (p. 29).

This brought this to my mind:

Psalm 23:1-3 “The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.”

No matter what you are facing in your life, the Word of God is your Shepherd; listen to His voice and let Him lead you beside still waters where your heart can rejoice in the joy of the Holy Spirit, as it is written “the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:15, 17).  He has a purpose for His overseeing of your soul (1st Peter 2:1-5, 9-12).

Therefore, “enter His courts with praise” and rest in the Word of God, for He is your good Shepherd, who alone can refresh your heart with living waters and nourish your soul in green pastures so that you will be fit for every good work.
