Many False Prophets Will Arise

Matthew 24:11 “And any false prophets will rise and will deceive many.”

In Jesus’ discourse on the end time’s He warned us that there would be “many false prophets” to “deceive many”.

Jesus used a powerful word twice, “πολύς” (polus, Strong’s #4183), which means “much, many, great,” and is used in passages like Luke 5:6; Acts 11:21; it denotes great abundance (e.g. Matt. 9:37; 1 Pet. 1:3; Matt. 24:30) (Vine’s Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words). Jesus is saying that there will be a great abundance of many false prophets to arise, and they will deceive a great abundance of many people!

Nothing is more clearly evident to me than the reality that the Church has been overrun by a horde of ravenous wolves. Truly, “they speak great swelling words”!

2 Peter 2:17-19 “These men are wells without water and clouds that are carried by a storm, for whom the gloom of darkness has been reserved forever. For when they speak arrogant words of vanity, they entice by the lusts of the flesh and by depravity those who barely escaped from those who live in error. Although they promise them freedom, they themselves are slaves of corruption, for by that which a man is overcome, to this he is enslaved!”

Nothing could be a more apt description of the so-called prophets of our day, peddling their books and descending upon the Church like a raging storm; they puff up the pride, ego, lust, and desires of unstable Christians and promise them deliverance of that which they are powerless to deliver!!

How many dreams, visions, and words from God have been delivered as if from the tempest of a dark storm in our modern day, only for them to be forgotten in the continual stream of false prophecies that sweep people away who do not test the words?

Brethren, do not be deceived by these wolves; though they speak great promises of power, glory, health, hidden mysteries, freedom, and wealth, they will by no means escape the severe punishment God has in store for those who presume to speak on His behalf when He has not spoken!

Test all things. “Seeing then that all these things are to be destroyed, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, while you are waiting for and desiring the coming of the day of God, in which the heavens will be destroyed by fire and the elements will be consumed by intense heat?” (2 Peter 3:11-12)

There is a Generation…

The scripture is inundated with prophecy, and Jesus told us that we should watch for the prophetic signs of the time so that we do not stumble in them.  When prophecy is ignored, the Church goes to sleep and becomes disobedient to Jesus’ commandment to keep watch!

I am, therefore, compelled to bring our attention to the following prophetic utterance regarding the generation of the end time:

There is a generation that curses its father and does not bless its mother.  There is a generation that is pure in its own eyes, yet is not washed from its filth.  There is a generation—how haughty its eyes and pretentious its looks.  There is a generation whose teeth are swords, whose fangs are knives, devouring the oppressed from the land and the needy from among mankind.

~Proverbs 30:11-14

But know this: Difficult times will come in the last days.  For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people!

~2 Timothy 3:1-5

First, let me speak this word of encouragement to my brethren; you’re not alone in this wicked world, neither has God abandoned you!  There is a great multitude, even if that multitude is small when compared to the great sea of people around it, that has kept themselves unpolluted from the filth of this world.  If you hunger and thirst for righteousness, and you worship God in the beauty of holiness, do not be discouraged, for God is faithful forever!

This generation, foretold in Agur’s prophetic utterence, and revealed again by Paul, portrays a self-righteous and haughty generation who disregards its parents and treads underfoot the helpless!

In this generation they will deny their own guilt and claim to be innocent, but they never turn from their iniquities!  Paul called them an “irreconcilable” people who “hold to a form of godliness but deny its power”.

John Calvin once wrote, “the gospel is not a doctrine of the tongue, but of life. It cannot be grasped by reason and memory only, but it is fully understood when it possesses the whole soul and penetrates to the inner recesses of the heart.”  This is a people in whom the gospel did not take root, but was stagnated by the traditions of men, as the LORD spoke through the prophet Isaiah, “these people approach Me with their mouths to honor Me with lip-service— yet their hearts are far from Me, and their worship consists of man-made rules learned by rote— therefore I will again confound these people with wonder after wonder.  The wisdom of their wise men will vanish, and the understanding of the perceptive will be hidden” (Isaiah 29:13-14).

But how can we cleanse our ways?

“How can a young man cleanse his way?  By taking heed according to Your word” ~Psalm 119:9

“Just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of the water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.” ~Ephesians 5:25-27

This generation greatly esteems itself; it scoffs at God and thinks it can chasten Him!  This generation has not walked humbly with God, but became boastful and proud in heart, even disregarding the judgments of God!

They do not heed the prophets, nor listen to the preachers; they drowned out the voice of their teachers with flatterers and charmers!  They refused to humble themselves before the judgments of God, but sought those for hire who would speak smooth words to them, despising God’s way as too harsh!

This is a generation who consume the poor to satiate their wretched lust to accumulate more!

They buy for cheap what was built on the empty stomachs and unlivable conditions of the poor- and they did not want to see their suffering, so they moved them to far away lands!

Therefore, “thus says the LORD:

For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals!  They trampled the heads of the poor on the dust of the ground and pervert the way of the humble.” ~Amos 2:6-7

There is no fear of God to be found among this people- nothing is found in their presence to halt this swarm from consuming the whole world!

Wherever the righteous are, whoever esteems pure things, avoid all such as these and have nothing to do with them!  They despise whoever is righteous, and betray them for gain.

Let not the righteous man harden his heart, but hear the prophetic utterance and live!

As lawlessness continues to grow and abound in our society and throughout the world, we are gleaning a clearer and clearer picture of the Man of Lawlessness.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 “Don’t let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God’s sanctuary, publicizing that he himself is God.”

The Man of Lawlessness is accompanied by a great departure from the truth; “ἀποστασία” (GK-apostasia; ENG- apostasy) means to “forsake” or “turn away”.  Lawlessness is the corrupting work of the spirit of the anti-Christ, who has already long been at work in the world (1 John 4:3).

Look at how the apostasy comes about and what the spirit of anti-Christ produces in people:

1 Timothy 4:1-2 “Now the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will depart from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.”

2 Timothy 3:1-5 “But know this: Difficult times will come in the last days. Avoid these people!”

This turning away from the truth is able to grip even those within the faith because they turned their ear and attention to deceitful spirits and the teachings of demons that lying men and women hypocritically preach with seared consciences.

The apostasy gives way to people adhering to a form of godliness but denying its power; being powerless, they will become;

  • lovers of self,
  • lovers of money,
  • boastful,
  • proud,
  • blasphemers,
  • disobedient to parents,
  • ungrateful,
  • unholy,
  • unloving,
  • irreconcilable,
  • slanderers,
  • without self-control,
  • brutal,
  • without love for what is good,
  • traitors,
  • reckless,
  • conceited,
  • lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

This is the spirit that will grip the world to bring about the apostasy- that great abandonment that falls the whole world into irreconcilable darkness- this is the spirit that is gripping the world even now!

It is the reason why these times will be difficult for anyone who will live in true, powerful godliness.

2 Thessalonians 2:7-8 “For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, and then the lawless one will be revealed.”

What we see reflected in those who are deceived by the mystery spirit of the antichrist is the essence of the Man of Lawlessness; it is as yet unknown in completeness- but, the drunkenness of its wine is seen throughout the whole world:  we see it every time we witness a Christian’s defiant and rebellious heart towards God- and even more as the Church becomes comfortable with this kind of rebellion- we see its mystery in the mocking of authority and demeaning of purity witnessed throughout both the professional and entertainment realms of life.  And the mystery of lawlessness is also present in the advance of tyranny and injustice throughout the world.

What is being birthed out of this mystery, however, is the abomination of desolation yet to be revealed.

Let me first exhort you all, my brethren, to “pay careful attention to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise— making the most of your time, because the days are evil.  Don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is, and don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless actions, but be filled by the Spirit:  ‘speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and making music from your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of Christ’.”  Give yourself entirely to such things as these; let your spirit, soul, and body be sanctified through and through, and persevere in these difficult times- even rejoicing at the loss of money, relationships, and even life that you may suffer as the days grow darker- and always remember who is faithful to preserve you blameless until the end.

Know that you are loved dearly by the Father who is in Heaven, and He is faithful, amen!

LET NO ONE DECEIVE YOU: There Will Be A Falling Away

This series is going to deal with four places in the scriptures where we are warned to “let no one deceive you“.

2nd Thessalonians 2:3

Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition.

Paul seems to be most concerned about this because he says “let no one deceive you by any means”.  This deception that we must guard against is explained fully in the text and so we will look at chapter 2:

  • 1Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, 2 not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come.”

I believe it’s important to note that they were being troubled in three sources: spirit, word, and letters supposed to come from them.  The objectives of these attacks were to convince them that the day of Christ had already come.

Paul makes it sound as though they may have been dealing with these from spirits, perhaps in visions or false prophecies (depending on how you might understand “word” here) and false letters from false apostles.

  • 6 And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way.”

There is One who is restraining the man of lawlessness himself and He will continue to restrain him until He is taken out of the way.  It is during this time that this many is being restrained that the “mystery” (literally hidden truth) of lawlessness is working in the world.  Make no mistake here: Paul is not saying that lawlessness possesses Truth, rather, that it conceals and hides truth and does, itself, claim to be a hidden truth.

I can think of no greater example in our age than the Emergent Church, whose bold claim is that they are emerging new in this age with hidden truths.

  • 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. 9 The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, 10 and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Paul then tells us something that is so very important: the coming of this lawless man is in accordance with the working of Satan with power, signs, and lying wonders and with all unrighteous deception.

There is power behind this work and will be great signs and lying wonders that lead people to destruction through unrighteous deception.

Therefore, when Paul says, “do not be deceived by any means”, he is emphasizing to us the unrighteous deceptiveness that we are going to be facing.  We must gird ourselves with all discernment and prepare ourselves to stand boldly against these deceptions in the Light of Truth!
