CHRISTmas Or WORLDliness?

This is the time of year that I see a lot of posts around the blogosphere about “the true meaning of Christmas”.  But for all the historical information being copy/pasted these days about the roots of Christmas I have not seen very many people calling attention to the “true meaning/purpose of Christ”.

I see more talk about keeping “Christ in CHRISTmas” than about keeping “Christ in CHRISTians”!  It appears from over here that people are more concerned about keeping their nativity than they are in being born-again!

As much as we have decorated Christmas with the scriptures, I find very little in the way I see Christmas being celebrated to be very Christian at all, and I know I’m definitely not the only one that sees this or has said it too.

Consider,

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” ~Matthew 4:17

It was Jesus’ purpose to declare the Kingdom of God come, and proclaim repentance in His name to all nations!  So in honoring the birth of Christ, where do we honor His purpose?

Likewise, consider,

Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.  For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.  For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” ~Matthew 16:24-26

It seems we fight about keeping Christ in Christmas, but look around you, where is He?

I see Christ in Christmas when a family feeds the hungry instead of gorging themselves with more food than they could ever possible need.  I see Christ in Christians when His disciples give new clothes to those who are without any, or when those who have no family are welcomed and loved as family.  Though the “Ebeneezer Scrooge’s” are always certain to find some statistic about “charity organizations having to turn away volunteers because they had to many” or “homeless men secretly owning a Ferrari” (both stories are reportedly true), but the degree of contentment some people take in such answers is appalling.

I do not see Christ in wooden nativity scenes that decorate fine houses, or in lights and Christmas trees filled with selfish presents.

Christ said it is in every cup of water given to the thirsty that you find Him, or in His children starving in prisons where He is to be found.  He is not wrapped up in fine red suits with a jolly demeanor, He is with every tear His persecuted children shed, and in every holy song of praise given to the Father.

Jesus gave all to all; we take all from all.  This is not CHRISTmas, this is WORLDliness!

Those who wish to find Christ in CHRISTmas, and Christ in CHRISTians will not go out to bust the budgets on presents.  They will be where He is!  So go!  Go where He is!
